Book Review: The First Mess Cookbook

I recently switched to a gluten-free, dairy-free diet in order to help my eczema. I had my first flare-up a couple of weeks ago, and though I’ve always had to deal with incredibly dry and sensitive skin, the flare-up was one of the most annoying, itchy, and painful experiences I’ve had to deal with when it came to my skin. My mom and I did a lot of research about what kinds of natural remedies were out there for eczema, including any changes to my diet that I could make. There are indeed certain foods that tend to cause flare-ups in other people and do I thought, what would happen if I stayed away from them too?

Since switching to this new diet, not only did my eczema clear up in a matter of days, but my stomach is much flatter and I lose weight without even trying (whereas before it was slow to come off). I feel more energized, sleep better, and my skin is much clearer. I wanted to look into cookbooks that offered different recipes for my new diet, and while I love Pinterest, I didn’t want to have to print out a bunch of recipes/pin/screenshot my way to a healthier lifestyle. I wanted a pretty cookbook that offered whole food recipes that could make me feel better and help with my skin condition. I stumbled upon Laura Wright’s The First Mess Cookbook, and my life has since changed.

Laura’s cookbook is a godsend, and I keep a copy of the book on my nightstand in my room. As soon as I received it, I was in awe over the beautiful photography and the plethora of healthy recipes she includes. While not all of the recipes are gluten-free, they are all dairy-free because the book is made for vegans. Each recipe lets you know if it uses different ingredients, like gluten, based on a key that she explains in the beginning of the book. I can easily look for recipes that are free of gluten thanks to this key. It’s absolutely amazing.

The cookbook is filled with delicious breakfast recipes, wholesome soups and stews, main dishes, desserts, and so much more. It’s literally amazing. I knew it would be a good cookbook to buy and keep for years to come just based on the high reviews it received on Amazon. After getting my own copy, I can vouch and say her cookbook is definitely one you need to get your hands on. Not only is it filled with recipes to make for yourself, for family, and also for friends, but it’s just beautiful to look at.

Laura also blogs are The First Mess, where she shares different recipes (again, complete with beautiful food photography!). Laura is also a brilliant writer and shares a little blurb about each recipe, and in the beginning, she writes a beautiful introduction where she shares memories of her childhood, and the role food has played in her life. The book is beautiful and sparks so much joy in its reader. You can feel Laura’s sincerity in her words, and her love for whole foods and sharing her recipes with others. It has changed my life.
